The Schönried tradition
Mountain in Schönried, and why it's worth the detour
Schönried's mountain restaurants — Horneggli, Rinderberg Spitz, Saanerslochgrat, Kübelialp — sit on one of the best-connected ski-area networks in the Saanenland. All four are accessible from the village by gondola; all four serve classic Alpine lunch menus; all four have sun terraces with major views. The Rinderberg (2,000 m) is the highest and has the biggest panorama. Saanerslochgrat is the most remote and quiet. Horneggli is the easiest to ski home from.
History & context
The Schönried lift network was built from the 1950s onwards as the village positioned itself as a ski-day destination separate from Gstaad. The mountain restaurants followed the gondola construction. Several of the Berghaus restaurants above Schönried have been operating continuously in the same families for 40-60 years.
What to order
Same Berghaus classics as above — rösti, sausages, Älplermagronen, fondue at lunch. The Rinderberg Spitz has a particularly good terrace sausage plate; Horneggli is strong on cheese-based dishes; Saanerslochgrat does a reliable winter fondue lunch.
Booking & practical
