Le Grand & La Terrasse at Gstaad Palace — terrace dining overlooking the valley

Gstaad Palace Restaurant Booking

The Gstaad Palace has dominated the skyline above the village since 1913, and its restaurants form one of Switzerland's most celebrated hotel dining programmes. Le Grand & La Terrasse, Chubut steakhouse and the GreenGo club-restaurant together offer dining for every mood — from a leisurely tasting menu on the famous terrace to a 2am steak after dancing. Here is everything you need to know to eat at the Palace.

The Gstaad Palace — a century of dining

Gstaad Palace opened in 1913 and has been owned by the Scherz family for four generations — a continuity of ownership that is reflected in the quality and consistency of the restaurant programme. The Palace sits on a ridge above Gstaad village at Palacestrasse 28, reached by a five-minute walk uphill from the Promenade or by the Palace's private shuttle. The hotel is one of Switzerland's Grand Hotels and maintains the standards of service that the designation implies.

Le Grand & La Terrasse — the flagship restaurant

Le Grand & La Terrasse is the Palace's main dining room and the most visible restaurant in Gstaad. The room combines Belle Époque architectural details with a contemporary Alpine atmosphere, and the kitchen produces seasonal Swiss and international cuisine built around local Saanenland produce. The signature dish is Swiss trout prepared in multiple preparations, and the tasting menu changes with the season. La Terrasse — the outdoor terrace section overlooking the valley — is one of the most iconic dining positions in Switzerland during summer.

Le Grand menu and what to order

The Palace tasting menu at Le Grand runs five to seven courses and is the recommended choice for a celebratory dinner. On the à la carte menu, the Palace afternoon tea (served in the lounge from 14:00–18:00) is one of the best in the Bernese Oberland. For lunch, the terrace menu is more accessible — main courses CHF 55–90 — and provides the same iconic view at a more relaxed price point. The wine list covers Swiss, French and Italian producers with a cellar that has been developing for decades.

Chubut — the Palace steakhouse

Chubut is the Gstaad Palace's Argentinian-style steakhouse, located on the lower floor of the hotel and open exclusively during the winter season. The concept — premium dry-aged cuts, an open fire grill, a Malbec-focused wine list — was introduced when the Palace decided to add a casual alternative to Le Grand's formal dining room. The result is one of the best steaks in Switzerland: dry-aged ribeye, côte de boeuf and prime beef preparations cooked over an open flame, served with classic accompaniments. Prices are CHF 70–160 per person for food.

GreenGo — the Palace club restaurant

GreenGo is the Palace's late-night restaurant and club, open from midnight to 4am during the winter season for hotel guests and their personal guests. The kitchen serves simple food — snacks, salads, light dishes — in a club atmosphere with a resident DJ. GreenGo is less a dining destination and more the end-of-night gathering point for the Palace's international clientele. Reservations are not taken; access is managed by the host on the door.

Palace Bar — cocktails before dinner

The Palace Bar is the natural pre-dinner gathering point for anyone eating at Le Grand or Chubut. The bar programme is classic — expertly made European cocktails, a Champagne list that reflects the Palace's connections with the major houses, and a light snack menu. The bar fills from 18:00 and is the social heart of the Gstaad winter season. Gentlemen are expected to be appropriately dressed; the bar maintains its own informal dress standard.

Dining at the Palace without staying there

Non-hotel guests are warmly received at Le Grand & La Terrasse and Chubut. The Palace does give priority for in-demand time slots to hotel guests, but tables are available to external diners throughout the season. For New Year's Eve and peak dates, Palace hotel guests will always have first access — external dining reservations for these dates should be attempted early, and it is worth contacting the Palace concierge directly.

Getting to the Gstaad Palace

The Palace is at Palacestrasse 28, a five to ten-minute walk uphill from Gstaad's Promenade. The hotel runs a shuttle from the village centre during dinner hours in winter. Taxis from the train station cost CHF 15–20. Parking is available in the Palace car park for restaurant guests.

Palace dress code

The Palace enforces a smart dress code across all its restaurant spaces. For Le Grand, jackets for men are expected at dinner; smart casual is acceptable for lunch. Chubut is more relaxed — smart casual throughout. No sportswear, no ski gear in the evenings. The Palace's standard is genuinely Grand Hotel and the clientele dresses accordingly.
