Gstaad lunch divides naturally into two streams: the mountain restaurant lunch (on skis or on a hiking trail, at altitude, with a 360-degree view) and the village restaurant lunch (the Promenade terrace, the hotel garden, the unhurried two-hour meal with wine). Both are excellent; the right choice depends on your day.
The mountain lunch is the defining midday experience of a Gstaad ski day. Arriving at Berghaus Wasserngrat or Wispile by cable car or gondola, ordering rösti and a glass of local wine on a sun-drenched terrace with the Saanenland spread below — this is what people remember. The village lunch, by contrast, offers the full restaurant experience: La Bagatelle's terrace for a French menu with valley panorama, Hotel Olden for a lively Promenade lunch, Sonnenhof in Saanen for a more contemplative French-Italian table.
La Bagatelle at Le Grand Chalet serves the best formal village lunch in Gstaad. The terrace overlooking the valley is open from 12:00 (weather and season permitting), and the kitchen serves the same level of French-classical cooking as the dinner menu — Bresse poultry, truffle preparations, beautiful salads — at a slightly more accessible lunch price point. The lunch menu runs CHF 55–120 per person for food, considerably less than the dinner tasting menu.
Hotel Olden on the Promenade is the natural meeting point for a Gstaad lunch. Open from 11:00 daily, the terrace faces the Promenade and is one of the prime people-watching spots in the village. The Mediterranean menu at lunch leans towards salads, fish preparations and simple pasta — lighter than the dinner offering, and well suited to a midday meal between activities. Service is quick and efficient.
If you have arrived at Gstaad train station and want lunch close by, Restaurant Victoria at Promenade 72 is a five-minute walk and serves traditional Swiss lunch from 08:00 daily. The Coop Restaurant at Untergstaadstrasse 20 is the most accessible lunch near the station — cafeteria-style but reliable, open Monday to Saturday. For something with more character, continue five minutes to the main Promenade where Rialto, Arc-en-Ciel and Olden all offer lunch from 11:30.
Restaurant Sonnenhof in Saanen serves lunch on Wednesday through Sunday. The 16 Gault Millau kitchen at its full capability for a midday meal — typically a three-course menu at CHF 60–90 per person — is one of the best value lunches in the Saanenland. The terrace facing the valley is particularly beautiful on a clear winter day with the mountains behind Saanen lit by the low Alpine sun.
HUUS Hotel in Saanen is open for lunch daily from 12:00. The Mediterranean kitchen makes it one of the most varied lunch menus in the valley — salads, sushi, Mediterranean plates — appealing to a wide range of preferences. Particularly convenient if you are near Saanen Airport or driving into the valley from Zweisimmen.
For a quick lunch between activities, the Promenade offers several informal options. Early Beck (the Promenade bakery, open from 06:30) provides sandwiches, quiches and pastries for eating in or taking away. Burger Station on Gstaadstrasse offers proper burgers made with Swiss beef. Wally's Gstaad at Promenade 49 is open from 11:00 for simple brasserie food including rösti, salads and daily specials.
For families with children, the mountain restaurant lunch is often the highlight of the week. Berghaus Wispile is the most family-accessible — short gondola, flat walk, simple menu. In the village, Arc-en-Ciel opens from 11:30 and serves wood-fired pizza from midday, making it the most practical family lunch option on the Promenade.
Most Gstaad village restaurants serve lunch from 11:30 or 12:00 to 14:00 or 14:30. A few (Hotel Olden, Victoria, Arc-en-Ciel) serve food continuously through the afternoon. Mountain restaurants serve until 15:30–16:00 or when lifts close. The kitchen at fine-dining restaurants (Chesery, Sommet, MEGU) does not open for lunch in most cases.
Most Gstaad lunch restaurants do not require a reservation except during peak dates. La Bagatelle is the exception — the terrace fills on sunny winter weekends and booking 48 hours ahead is wise. For Sonnenhof lunch, always book. Mountain restaurants (Wasserngrat, Wispile) are walk-in only. For any group of 6 or more, call ahead regardless of restaurant.
