Saanen is Gstaad's quieter, more genuinely local neighbour — two kilometres down the valley, centred around a 12th-century church and framed by the farmland that gives the Saanenland its name. The lunch scene here is more village than resort: honest Swiss food, Italian wood-fired pizza, and the 16 Gault Millau cooking of Restaurant Sonnenhof. All at better value than the main Gstaad Promenade.
Saanen is two kilometres from Gstaad and five minutes by taxi or ten by foot along the valley floor. Ristorante Pizzeria da Corrado on Bahnhofstrasse is Saanen's neighbourhood Italian — wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta, daily specials and a kitchen that cooks with genuine care. The tiramisù is made daily. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30. No reservation needed for weekday lunch; book for Saturday and Sunday.
Cherry's Bistro on Dorfstrasse 53 combines Italian wood-fired pizza with French bistro cooking — salade niçoise, croque monsieur, fresh pasta. Open daily from 11:00 with an excellent take-away service. The most flexible lunch option in Saanen.
The 16 Art-Bar-Restaurant on Dorfstrasse (and Mittelgässli 16) is primarily an evening destination, but the kitchen opens for lunch on selected days. The low-ceilinged chalet setting and carefully curated wine list make a weekday lunch here one of the quieter pleasures of the Saanenland.
Restaurant Kernen on Dorfstrasse 43 is Saanen's reliable Swiss lunch option — warm wood interior, rösti, fondue and simple meat preparations. Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00. The local's choice for a quick working lunch.
HUUS Hotel at Schönriedstrasse 74 in Saanen serves lunch daily from 12:00. The Mediterranean-inspired menu makes it the most varied midday choice in the village. Particularly good for groups with different dietary preferences.
The train from Gstaad station to Saanen takes 5 minutes and runs every 30 minutes throughout the day. By taxi it is 5 minutes and costs CHF 15–20. By foot along the valley floor it is 25 minutes in good weather — a pleasant walk between the two villages in summer or on a clear winter day.
