Schönried sits at 1,230 metres on the saddle between Saanenmöser and Gstaad — a quiet, predominantly German-speaking village with a distinctly different character from the main Gstaad resort. The restaurant scene is small and intimate: Berghotel Hornberg for honest Alpine cooking on a working farm, and Azalée at Hotel Ermitage for one of the finest French kitchens in the entire Bernese Oberland. Both offer something that the main Gstaad Promenade cannot — genuine peace.
Schönried is 6km from Gstaad by road — 8 minutes by car, 10 minutes by train from Gstaad station. The village is on the Montreux-Zweisimmen rail line, making it easily accessible from both the valley floor and from the direction of Interlaken. The restaurants here are not resort restaurants: they are genuine establishments that have developed their kitchens for local and regional clientele over decades. If you want to eat well without the social performance of the Gstaad Promenade, Schönried is the right choice.
Restaurant Azalée at Hotel Ermitage Schönried is the most serious restaurant in the village and one of the most consistently excellent kitchens in the entire Saanenland. The French classical menu uses Swiss Alpine ingredients — Pays-d'Enhaut lamb, Saanenland dairy, local foraged herbs — with a precision and care that reflects a kitchen of genuine ambition. Open daily from 19:00. The hotel's wine programme focuses on Burgundy and Bordeaux, maintained with serious collector knowledge.
Berghotel Hornberg is the antithesis of Azalée — a working farm-hotel above Saanenmöser where the cows are in the barn and the cheese is on the table the same day. The cooking is traditional Swiss: Berner Rösti with fried eggs and home-made alp cheese, raclette from the farm's own milk, simple meat preparations with proper mountain sauces. The setting — an old Berner Oberland farmhouse with a large sun terrace — is as authentic as the food. Open daily, seasonal hours.
Azalée is open to non-hotel guests for dinner. The intimate dining room seats approximately 40; booking is essential on any evening from December through March and in July-August. The hotel's location in Schönried means it attracts guests who are deliberately seeking to avoid the Gstaad main scene, creating a particularly pleasant atmosphere at dinner — serious about food and wine, relaxed about social theatre.
The train from Gstaad station to Schönried takes 6 minutes and runs every 30 minutes. By taxi it is 8 minutes (CHF 20–25). Driving is straightforward via Saanenmöser road. Return taxis from Schönried after dinner: Hotel Ermitage concierge can arrange, or call Gstaad taxi (approximately CHF 25). The last train back to Gstaad from Schönried runs around 22:30; check the SBB timetable for exact times.
Summer in Schönried is arguably the most beautiful season — the Alpine meadows are in full bloom, the cow herds are on the high pastures, and the whole area has an unhurried quality. Berghotel Hornberg is at its finest in summer, with the terrace open and farm activities visible. Azalée continues through the summer season at the same quality level. For a summer dinner out of Gstaad, Schönried deserves serious consideration.
Azalée is one of the better choices for a special occasion dinner outside the immediate Gstaad village scene. The intimacy of Hotel Ermitage, the quality of the French kitchen and the sense of genuine seclusion make it ideal for anniversaries, proposals and small celebration dinners. Schönried sits directly on the Gstaad-Schönried ski area, with slopes descending to the village from Saanenmöser. After skiing, the hotel bars of Ermitage and the quieter village options are the natural après destination. In summer, the Schönried area is an excellent starting point for hiking up to the Rellerli area and the panoramic paths toward Rinderberg.
