Vegetarian and Vegan Dining in the Saanenland

Gstaad Restaurant editorial · 20 April 2026 · 9 min read

Gstaad is not, on the surface, vegetarian-friendly. The valley’s food culture is cheese, cured meat, rösti and game. But the grand-hotel kitchens are among the most capable in Switzerland and they handle dietary restrictions well — often with separate vegetarian or vegan tasting menus that never make it onto the standard card. This is the map of where to eat a proper meat-free meal in the Saanenland, from the Michelin axis down to the village bistro.

The fine-dining tier: ask for the vegetarian tasting

All three of Gstaad’s Michelin-starred kitchens run a dedicated vegetarian tasting menu on request, even when the menu does not advertise it.

  • Sommet by Martin Göschel at The Alpina: a five- or seven-course vegetarian signature menu using Saanenland produce, herbs and root vegetables. Request at booking, 48-hour notice. Vegan possible with longer notice.
  • LEONARD’s at Le Grand Bellevue: flexible vegetarian card within the tasting. Chef Urs Gschwend’s team is used to international dietary requests.
  • Restaurant Chesery: less advertised but Robert Speth will cook a vegetarian menu on request; the kitchen is built around seasonal Alpine produce, which gives a strong starting point. Vegan is possible with notice but is not the kitchen’s natural gesture.
  • Restaurant Sonnenhof in Saanen (16 GM): happy to run a vegetarian tasting; the French-Italian backbone of the kitchen makes this easy. Pasta-forward.
  • La Bagatelle: strong vegetable menu, especially summer terrace.
  • Restaurant Azalée in Schönried: small enough to customise on request.
  • The Mansard: modern Swiss, runs a vegetable-forward tasting.

The Japanese and Asian axis: the easiest meat-free option

The single most-naturally-vegetarian restaurant in Gstaad is MEGU at The Alpina. The Japanese menu has a full vegetable section, the sushi counter runs a vegetable omakase, and the sake list pairs beautifully with vegetable plates. For a vegetarian fine-dining night in Gstaad, MEGU is the first-call.

Mango Restaurant Gstaad is the reliable Indian option — the vegetarian side of the card is the better half. A tandoori vegetable platter and a dal for the table is a strong order for a mixed group. Mumbai Local by The Happy Nest in Saanen is similar.

Koriander in Schönried runs a pan-Asian card with good vegetable options. HUUS Gstaad has a vegetable-forward international menu.

Navigating fondue country as a vegetarian

A fondue is vegetarian by default. A raclette is vegetarian by default. The issue for strict vegetarians is cheese rennet (most Swiss AOP cheeses use animal rennet), and for vegans the issue is cheese itself.

Practical rules:

  • If you eat cheese but not meat: any Saanenland fondue restaurant is fine. Order the moitié-moitié without the charcuterie starter. Pair with bread, potatoes, gherkins and pearl onions. Avoid the “fondue chinoise” (meat-based) which is a separate dish.
  • If you are strict vegetarian and care about rennet: the Rougemont Gruyère AOP uses traditional animal rennet, as does Vacherin Fribourgeois. Some cheesemakers use microbial rennet — ask at Le Chalet in Rougemont, where they make cheese on site and will know. Otherwise assume Saanenland cheese uses animal rennet.
  • If you are vegan: fondue country is not your friend. Vegan fondue as a concept is not served in the Saanenland in 2026. Your best moves are the Asian restaurants above, or the vegetarian tasting at one of the Michelin rooms with vegan modifications booked in advance.

Mountain and berghaus options

Mountain restaurants are the weakest vegetarian ground in the valley. Most berghaus menus run two or three vegetarian options only: Älplermagronen (cheese), Rösti mit Käse und Ei (cheese and egg), a side salad plate, and occasionally a vegetarian spätzle. Vegan options at altitude are almost non-existent.

Better mountain options for vegetarians: the larger berghaus kitchens run broader cards — Berghotel Hornberg in Schönried, HUUS Gstaad (Saanen), and the Eggli Lounge all have two or three proper vegetarian mains. For vegans, pack a snack or eat at valley altitude before going up.

Bakeries, cafés and breakfasts

earlybeck and earlybeck Boulanger Confiseur are the reliable vegetarian breakfasts. The Saanen outlet has a larger savoury section.

Délice Café & Chocolatier in Saanen runs a vegetarian café menu. Bärgsunne in Schönried has vegetarian options. Cappuccino in Gstaad runs brunches with several vegetarian plates.

For a vegan-friendly breakfast: the earlybeck sourdough is vegan, honey-alternatives are available at Cappuccino, and Délice keeps some vegan truffles.

Italian restaurants: the quiet reliable category

For a casual vegetarian dinner that is not a tasting menu, Italian is the move.

  • Pizzeria Arc-en-Ciel in Gstaad: full vegetarian pizza range, pasta with vegetables, margherita and marinara as vegan defaults.
  • Da Corrado in Saanen: classic pizzeria, vegetarian-strong.
  • Ristorante Bar Rialto in Gstaad: tidy Italian card with strong pasta.
  • Pizza Basta: the casual Gstaad pizza takeaway.
  • Fiore Pizzeria Focacceria in Saanen: focaccia-forward.
  • Cherry’s Bistro in Saanen: Italian-French fusion, reliable.

A three-day vegetarian itinerary

  • Day one dinner: MEGU at The Alpina. Vegetable omakase at the sushi counter, sake pairing.
  • Day two lunch: Sonnenhof in Saanen with a pre-arranged vegetarian tasting on the terrace.
  • Day two dinner: Pizzeria Arc-en-Ciel — a casual vegetarian pizza night to balance the fine dining.
  • Day three lunch: Mango Restaurant Gstaad, vegetable thali for the table.
  • Day three dinner: Sommet at The Alpina, vegetarian signature menu (book 72 hours out).

A week-long vegan trip is harder. Substitute Sommet with a second MEGU visit and the Italian lunches with Délice Café plates. Beyond that, pack snacks for mountain days.
