The Gstaad valley · 2026 edition
The Berghaus network: 12 restaurants accessible by gondola, chair lift or hiking trail.
The Saanenland has one of the best-connected mountain-restaurant networks in Switzerland. From the valley floor (1,050m), gondolas lift you to 2,200m — onto panoramic terraces, berghaus stübli, ski-in/ski-out lunch spots. This is the full list of Gstaad valley mountain restaurants: Eggli, Wispile, Wasserngrat (all above Gstaad), Rinderberg and Horneggli (above Schönried), Saanerslochgrat (between), plus the handful of alp-level restaurants on the Videmanette and the Glacier 3000 base.
Every Gstaad mountain restaurant serves a variation of the classic Berghaus menu: rösti, bratwurst, Älplermagronen, fondue at lunch (November-April), barley soup, cheese board, apple strudel. Some have elevated this formula (Horneggli does a serious summer cheese platter; Wasserngrat has a particularly good wine selection for a mountain restaurant); most keep it simple. Prices CHF 25-40 per main.
Access is the key planning variable. Winter lifts run 08:30-16:30, last ride down 16:45 — which means mountain lunches are a genuine commitment of half a day. Summer lifts run until 17:30. A few restaurants accept dinner bookings on specific evenings when the lift operates late; these are rare and book out 4-6 weeks ahead.
In summer, every mountain restaurant is connected to the hiking network — you can hike up (1-3 hours from the valley floor), or take the lift up and hike down. Good boots and water are the only requirements; the paths are marked and generally not technical.
