Gstaad Restaurants with a View

Panoramic terraces and view-facing chalets — the tables where what's outside is half the meal.

View dining in the Gstaad valley splits into two categories: high-altitude panoramic (mountain Berghaus restaurants from 1,500m to 2,200m) and valley-overlook (chalet-hotel restaurants at the edge of villages with open Saanenland vistas). Both work best at lunch in summer or late-afternoon in winter, when the light on the mountains is at its most dramatic. This is our curated list, ranked by the quality of the view, not only the quality of the food — though only restaurants with at least solid cooking make the cut.

The best high-altitude views are Rinderberg Spitz and Wasserngrat — both above 2,000m, both with full Bernese Alps panoramas. For valley-overlook views, Chesery and Hotel Olden both sit on the edge of Gstaad village with south-facing terraces. In Saanen, Sonnenhof has a quieter valley view; in Schönried, Alpenrose faces the Rinderberg.

Summer is the best season — terraces open, longer daylight, clearer air. Prime time is 17:00-19:00 for drinks and early dinner, when the light on the peaks turns pink (locally called 'Alpenglühen'). Book a terrace table specifically; indoor tables in the same restaurant have the same food but not the same experience.

In winter, most terraces close. A few mountain restaurants keep small heated outdoor sections open for lunch. The best winter-view experience is actually from inside: panorama-window dining rooms at Sommet, LEONARD's, Alpenrose, Ermitage.

Frequently asked

Which Gstaad restaurant has the most famous view?

Wasserngrat (above Gstaad, 2,040m) and Rinderberg Spitz (above Schönried, 2,000m). Both are lunch-only in normal operation.

Can I book a terrace table specifically?

Yes — tell us when you WhatsApp and we pass the request to the restaurant. Terrace seating is first-come / first-booked in summer, so early booking helps.

Are view tables more expensive?

Usually the same price as indoor tables at the same restaurant. At mountain restaurants, terrace dining is often the default and not a supplement.

What is Alpenglühen?

The pink-orange glow on the Alpine peaks at sunset. Typical time in summer 20:30-21:15; in winter 16:00-16:45. Best viewing altitude 1,800m+.

Can I get a lake view in the Gstaad valley?

The Lauenensee lake has a small summer restaurant on its shore. Saanen Lake has no restaurant directly on the water.
